Meet Yaupon Mike and his good friend, Puffin Pete—the unlikely pair at the heart of the Puffin Pelican mural.

With his shades, beach hat and slightly mischievous grin, Yaupon Mike always looks like he’s up to

something—and whatever it is, it probably involves sunshine, salt air and a little island fun. He’s the kind of

character who knows everyone, never misses a good beach day and might just have a story or two he isn’t

telling.

Puffin Pete traveled a little farther to find his favorite place by the sea, but once he felt the sunshine, heard the

waves and met the locals, he knew he had found home.

Together, these two feathered friends represent all the different “birds” who flock to Oak Island. Some were

born here, some vacation here and some arrived for a visit only to discover they never wanted to leave. We

may come from different places and have different stories, but once the island gets into your heart, you become

part of the flock.

Painted by local artist JT Mariotte of UR Coastal Country, this mural is a colorful celebration of friendship,

community and the wonderfully unique characters who make OKI feel like home.
